Programme

Community Action & Learning

The Community Action & Learning Programme brings people together through practical environmental action and learning rooted in everyday community life. The programme creates spaces where citizens of different ages, backgrounds, and experiences can work together, learn from one another, and build trust through shared responsibility for their surroundings.

Rather than focusing on formal education or one-off activities, the programme supports long-term engagement. Learning happens through doing gardening, composting, cleaning public spaces, sharing skills, and caring for common places. These shared practices help strengthen social ties while encouraging more sustainable ways of living.

Accountability

What the Programme Includes

Urban Community Gardens

Urban gardens serve as open community spaces where residents grow food together, learn about sustainable practices, and take care of shared green areas. The gardens support intergenerational exchange, informal learning, and cooperation between neighbours, volunteers, and local institutions.

Current initiatives include Urban Garden Podgorica and Urban Garden Pomorandža, as well as coordination through the Urban Gardeners’ Club, which connects gardeners and volunteers across neighbourhoods.

Clean up Montenegro Network

Cleanup Montenegro is a national volunteer network coordinated by Zero Waste Montenegro. Through cleanup actions and citizen science activities, the network brings together individuals, schools, NGOs, and informal groups to care for public spaces and better understand pollution challenges.

Cleanup activities take place across Montenegro on International Coastal Clean up in September and encourage cooperation across communities, regions, and generations, combining action with learning and shared responsibility.

Education and Learning Activities

The programme includes workshops, outdoor classroom sessions, school visits, and youth activities connected to gardens and cleanup actions. These activities focus on practical knowledge, environmental awareness, and understanding sustainability as part of everyday life.

Learning is informal, hands-on, and adapted to different age groups, emphasizing curiosity, cooperation, and problem-solving.

Get in touch!

We welcome schools, organizations, and community groups interested in organizing educational activities or events in our community gardens.

The Community Action & Learning Programme is coordinated by the ZWMNE team in close cooperation with volunteers, local partners, schools, and institutions. The programme builds on existing initiatives and relationships, supporting continuity rather than short-term projects.

The programme is based on simple principles:

  1. open participation
  2. shared responsibility
  3. learning through practice

Activities are designed to be accessible and inclusive. People can join at different levels and contribute in ways that suit them, whether through regular involvement or occasional participation. Dialogue and cooperation emerge naturally through working side by side.

Whether you have time, skills, or simply curiosity, you are welcome to join and contribute there are many ways to take part:

  • join garden activities
  • participate in cleanup actions
  • support educational workshops
  • volunteer occasionally or regularly
